Information about possible risks

Most men recover well after vasectomy. Mild soreness, bruising or swelling can occur and usually settles as the body heals. Complications are uncommon, but it is helpful to know that they can include:

bleeding or a collection of blood in the scrotum (haematoma);
infection at the wound or within the scrotum;
a small lump caused by leaked sperm (sperm granuloma), which is usually harmless;
persistent or chronic scrotal or testicular pain that may require further treatment;
failure because sperm remain after the procedure or the tubes later reconnect (recanalization), which can lead to pregnancy, including rarely after an earlier clear semen result.

Your clinician will explain these risks, discuss anything specific to your health and answer your questions before the procedure.
