Benefits of vasectomy
Vasectomy can be a useful choice for a man who is sure he does not want future biological children, whether his family is complete or he chooses not to have children. The decision must be informed and voluntary.

Choose the family size that is right for you
Vasectomy helps prevent future pregnancies when you are certain you do not want more biological children, or any biological children. It can support the family life you choose. You do not need to decide today, and you can change your mind before the procedure.
Use a lasting, hormone-free method
Vasectomy is highly effective permanent contraception. After clearance, it avoids daily pills or repeated contraceptive injections for pregnancy prevention within that relationship. It does not lower testosterone or normally affect erections, orgasm or sexual desire. Condoms may still be needed for infection protection.
Reduce risks from unintended pregnancy
Preventing an unintended pregnancy avoids the health risks of that pregnancy and birth. Family planning can reduce pregnancy-related illness and deaths and the need for unsafe abortion. This is an indirect benefit of preventing pregnancy; vasectomy does not treat an existing pregnancy, obstetric fistula or any other complication.
Plan time, care and household resources
Choosing whether to have further children can help you plan for housing, food, education, healthcare and the time and emotional support your family needs. Family circumstances differ. Vasectomy does not guarantee financial security, a stronger relationship or responsible parenting.
Exercise your reproductive health choices
Access to family planning supports informed decisions about whether to have children. In Kenya, Article 43(1)(a) of the Constitution recognises the right to health, including reproductive healthcare. Choosing vasectomy should be free of pressure, including pressure linked to sponsorship, poverty or family size.
Support the children already in your care
If you have children, planning your family can help you focus your care and resources on them. Kenya’s Constitution, Article 53(1)(e), recognises a child’s right to parental care and the responsibilities of both parents. Vasectomy does not remove existing responsibilities or guarantee that a parent will meet them.
Continue caring for your overall health
WISPIVAS encourages healthy eating, regular activity, avoiding tobacco and limiting alcohol. These support general wellbeing; they are not effects of vasectomy. During recovery, follow your clinician’s guidance before returning to exercise or strenuous work.
Before you decide
Treat vasectomy as permanent: reversal may fail. It does not work immediately. Continue contraception until your clinician reviews your semen test and confirms clearance. It does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Bleeding, infection, persistent scrotal pain and rare failure can occur. Discuss benefits, risks and reversible alternatives with your clinician before the procedure.
